Labour Youth letter to Greyhound calling on them to end the lockout

Brian and Michael Buckley,

Greyhound Household Head Office,

Crag Avenue,

Clondalkin Industrial Estate,

Dublin 22.

Dear Brian and Michael Buckley,

I am writing to you on behalf of Labour Youth, the youth wing of the Labour Party, to call on you to end the lockout of your staff.

We believe the workers have been treated appallingly. It was wrong of you to unilaterally impose an outrageous and unjustifiable pay cut of 35%. The workers rightly rejected this savage pay cut. Rather than locking the workers out of the workplace, you should have followed the Labour Court recommendation of negotiating a fair outcome with the workers.

There has been a noticeable deterioration in the quality of waste disposal services provided to the public by Greyhound throughout this dispute. The appalling manner in which the Greyhound workers have been treated, coupled with the deterioration in services, is hugely damaging to your corporate image. The level of support from members of the public, politicians and civil society for the locked-out Greyhound workers has been overwhelmingly positive.

It is in no one’s interest for this lockout to continue. The workers want to get back to work, the public want quality waste disposal services restored and it is not in the interest of Greyhound management to garner a negative corporate image.

Therefore, Labour Youth reiterates its call to you to end this lockout. It is completely unfair and unjust to lockout hardworking staff and leave them living in subsistence conditions. We urge you now to negotiate with the workers, as recommended by the Labour Court.

I am happy to meet with you if you would like to discuss further Labour Youth’s concerns about the treatment of Greyhound workers.

Yours sincerely,

Ciaran Garrett

Labour Youth Chairperson and Labour Party Executive Board Member
